Carrier or rack: two different jobs on one shelf
Three hundred and five of the four hundred and seventy-eight products on this shelf are Side Carrier hardware — the subframe-mounted frame a pannier hangs from, already covered in detail on the SW-Motech collection page. The rest is what most people actually mean when they ask for a rack: fifty-nine Adventure-Rack and fifty-six Street-Rack platforms for a top case or a strapped bag, sixteen older Alu-Rack units still on sale, three small-bike Top Rack fittings, and thirty-nine adapter kits, extension plates and mounting brackets that connect one to the other. Two rack generations, still both on sale
Not every rack on this shelf uses the same fitting. The sixteen Alu-Rack units — still listed for bikes such as the Honda CB1300 (GPT.01.254.100/B), the BMW K1200S and the Ducati Multistrada 1200 — use an older three-fastener QUICK-LOCK adapter plate. Current-generation Street-Rack and Adventure-Rack platforms, such as the one built for the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure (GPT.07.904.19000/B), use a different safety-latch buckle instead, and the two systems are not interchangeable. Check which generation a listing actually is before you order an adapter for it — the fitting instructions supplied with the rack say which system it uses, and it is worth reading before assuming an old adapter plate will do.
What SW-Motech does publish, on every rack page we checked, is the rack's own weight: a bare Alu-Rack runs to around 0.7kg, a Street-Rack to about 2.6kg, an Adventure-Rack to roughly 1.7kg. That is the platform alone, before a case, an adapter plate or anything packed inside it.
What a rack needs before it holds anything
A bare rack does not hold a case on its own. It needs a separate adapter kit or plate, such as the SW-Motech Adapter Kit for Adventure-Rack (GPT.00.152.35300/B), matched to whichever case system you already own: Givi or Kappa's Monokey, Givi or Kappa's Monolock, Shad, Krauser, or SW-Motech's own TRAX and Urban ABS ranges. Monokey and Monolock share a manufacturer but are not interchangeable, and it is a mismatch buyers make often enough that it is worth checking your own case's mounting system before ordering the plate, not after. Soft luggage that doesn't use a case system at all takes a separate extension plate instead, bolted on purely to enlarge the flat surface for strapping a bag down. In practice a rack is rarely a single purchase — expect the plate as a second item, and in some cases a mounting kit as a third.
The further back a topbox sits from the rack's mounting points, the more force those points carry once it is loaded. That is ordinary leverage rather than a disputed point, and it is the reason a rack built for one bike is not something to improvise onto another.
What SW-Motech doesn't publish
Across the three rack product pages we checked directly on SW-Motech's own site, spanning both the current and the older generation, none states a maximum load in kilograms or pounds for what the rack itself can carry. Each one gives the rack's own weight and which cases it fits, and nothing more. The separate genuine Harley-Davidson rack page does state a figure in writing for its own hardware — one maker publishes a number here and the other does not, and that is worth knowing plainly rather than filling the gap ourselves. If a figure exists for your rack it will be in the fitting instructions supplied with it, specific to your bike, and whatever that says, your motorcycle's own handbook sets the real ceiling for what it should be carrying regardless of what any rack is rated to.
