A Street Glide rider fitting a taller screen and a Fat Boy owner adding one for the first time are choosing between different hardware families, not just different-looking screens, and getting that right matters more than tint or finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eLook over the screen, not through it\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery one of these windshields comes in more than one height, and the advice that keeps coming back on the rider forums, said the same way from 2012 through to 2024, is to look over the top of a screen rather than through it. Harley-Davidson say the same on their own screen listings: \"select a windshield that tops out just below eye level. This reduces helmet buffeting while allowing a view unobstructed by dirt, bugs, and rain drops.\" Sun, rain and oncoming headlights all get harder to judge once you're looking through glass or polycarbonate instead of over it. The clearest proof that this comes down to the rider, not the bike, is riders comparing notes on the very same model: on a Road King Classic, one owner at 5'7\" found a screen an inch shorter than their old one made the difference between straining to see and riding comfortably, while another at 6'3\" looked comfortably over a screen only three-quarters of an inch taller than that. Same bike, two different right answers. It isn't only an aftermarket problem, either. One 2024 Street Glide owner rejected the factory screen on day one, at 5'7\", because it sat too low to do anything useful. So the right height is something we'd rather work out with you than guess at from a listing: tell us your height and how you sit on the bike, and we'll talk you through which of these actually suits you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eThree mounting systems, and the hardware doesn't cross between them\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet Glide and Electra Glide carry a Batwing fairing and take a screen that mounts to it, sold here as \u003cstrong\u003eBatwing Fairing\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eWind Splitter\u003c\/strong\u003e screens. Harley-Davidson lists the 12-inch one, 57400226, for '14 to '24 Electra Glides and Street Glides with a few named exceptions. Road Glide's fairing is a different shape, and its screens are listed for Road Glide only: 57400271 and 57400270. Road King has no fairing at all. It takes an \u003cstrong\u003eH-D Detachables\u003c\/strong\u003e windshield on the forks, 57400383 or 57400381, and the Road King Custom needs its own docking kit, 58221-04, which Harley-Davidson lists for '04 to '25 FLHRS and '17 to '25 FLHRXS. Fat Boy, Fat Bob, Breakout, Low Rider and Street Bob take a standalone screen that docks onto the forks too, and here the names cross over. Wind Splitter appears on those as well: the Wind Splitter Detachable Compact, 57400367, is listed for '18-later Fat Boy, and the Wind Splitter Quick-Release Super Sport, 57400334, for '18-later FXBR and FXBRS, the Breakout. So the word on the box doesn't tell you the mounting system. The fitment line and the part number do. Pan America runs a third system again, its own Adventure windshields in short, upper and tall options. None of the three families bolt onto each other's bikes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo nearly identical King-Size H-D Detachables screens for the older FL Softails show why the fitment line matters more than the name. The 20-inch Nostalgic, 57140-05, says \"Additional mounting hardware not required.\" The 18-inch, 57061-09, needs a separate docking hardware kit, in Harley-Davidson's own words. The other docking kit on this shelf, 58164-96A, is for H-D Detachables screens on 39mm forks, which Harley-Davidson lists for '88 to '22 Sportsters and '91 to '05 Dynas, some of which also need a turn-signal wiring kit. Neither docking kit is the Tour-Pak or backrest docking point riders usually mean when the same term comes up on the forums. Anyone running a detachable screen and taking it off for summer needs somewhere to put it, too: the windshield bags on this page are sized for that, with one exception Harley-Davidson names itself. The 7-inch Wind Splitter, 57400205, \"Does not fit with windshield bags or pouches.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBuffeting isn't usually about how tall the screen is\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe most repeated technical point across the forums, made independently by different people in different years, is that the air hitting your helmet mostly comes from underneath and around the screen, not over the front of it. A taller screen on its own doesn't reliably fix buffeting, and can sometimes make it worse. The fixes don't agree with each other. Fork-mounted deflectors get mentioned most often, a taller and recurved screen throws more air over the head for some riders, and at least one rider solved his buffeting by cutting his own screen shorter rather than fitting a taller one. There's no single fix that works for everyone, which is really the same lesson as the height question above: it comes down to your bike, your riding position and trial and error, not the size printed on the box.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat the law actually asks for\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUK law's starting point is your view of the road, not a spec for the glass. Regulation 30(1) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 says: \"Every motor vehicle shall be so designed and constructed that the driver thereof while controlling the vehicle can at all times have a full view of the road and traffic ahead of the motor vehicle.\" There's no separate numbered standard for a motorcycle windscreen the way there is for a crash helmet's ECE rating. That's the same idea behind the forum advice about looking over a screen rather than through it: a screen that blocks your view is the problem the regulation is aimed at, whatever its tint or height. It matters more than it sounds. A rider on an Irish forum described being forced to look through a tall fixed screen in low winter sun or on a wet night with oncoming headlights, and two separate posters on dark-tinted screens reported losing visibility the same way. A dark tint might look sharper in the showroom; whether you can still see clearly through or over it on a wet night on the way back from Leeds is worth working out before you commit to one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCleaning is the other place these go wrong. Riders warn about it independently across several different threads: ordinary ammonia-based glass cleaner damages the coating on a genuine screen, leaving it cloudy instead of clear. Every screen we checked on Harley-Davidson's own listings is hard-coated polycarbonate, and that coating is what the cleaner attacks. That's worth knowing before anyone reaches for whatever's already under the sink.
